I recently decided that it was time for me to channel some inner Love Actually and make the bold statement to rock a good turtle neck. At first, I knew it was a risky move, but very quickly I was receiving a lot of compliments and decided the risk paid off. My harshest critic was the twelve-year-old I babysit for, whom commented "I didn't realise we were doing 90s fancy dress today", but I put this down to his naivety and the fact he denies Lyle and Scott to be chavvy. I soon decided that the 90s, was exactly what I was aiming for.
My rules for turtle necks:
1. Stick to dark/neutral colours, too bright and you run the risk of looking like a 70s reject, and as I stated, it is the 90s I'm gunning for
2. Layer up as much as possible, place a thin turtle neck under a thicker jumper, maybe even a patterned knit and you have some quality trend-setting on the go
3. Never wear with a hood. Hooded coats/jackets look ridiculous paired with a turtle neck, stick to a classic quilted jacket or blazer
Below are some turtle necks I have found on the British high street, at affordable prices, that manage to embrace that geek chic you require...
Topman £15
An absolute bargain at £15 and burgundy is rife on the scene right now
ASOS £14
Ah yes, the versatile grey, this one is great for layering
Reiss £59
Slightly up the price scale, but it's a thick knit and I love the detail
River Island £32
Slightly different neck, but classic colours
